This week I had the pleasure of meeting Joanne Tafalla, who is a third year here at Long Beach State. I interviewed Joanne with my friend Kergina, who is also in the 2:30 p.m. session, because we all decided to do our triptych together for flashcard submissions. Joanne is currently 21 years of age and is from Bellflower, California, which isn’t too far from Long Beach at all. When Joanne told us where she was from, Kergina also realized that they were from the same town, and even the same high school! The both attended St. Joseph’s private school for all girls. Her current major is Health science, she says she chose this major mostly because she doesn’t know exactly what she wants to do yet, but she knows she would like to work in the medical field, and health science offers a very broad spectrum for people studying in it. When asked what she liked to do in her free time, Joanne was blatantly honest and said, “sleep, eat, hang with friends.” this was something I really appreciated because most people try to sound like they are always out and about, always doing something new and cool, but for the majority of us, we are just happy to lay down and grab a snack. The coolest thing to me about Joanne is that she had no intentions of going to college before she applied. She said she just never considered it being an option for her, or even something that she was interested in, but here she is, more than halfway through her college career, and loving it. Not only that, but she is pursuing a major that requires quite a lot of schooling, something that can scare a lot of college kids from pursuing, but she has stuck to it and I admire her for that. All in all, Joanne was a delightful person to speak to and an even more interesting one.
